President Update

Dear fellow members

July marks the start of a new membership year.

We welcome back 17 former members who have rejoined our club. I am pleased to welcome a further 30 new members who have joined across various categories.

Leading into the membership renewal, the board invested considerable time and effort in addressing our membership anomalies. The board had extensive data and sought feedback from the membership. We believe the most affected member category was our weekday members. I can advise that we have had 3 resignations from this category. I would like to acknowledge our weekday members who have stayed with the club and supported the change.

The board and sub-committee had modelled and calculated the net outcome of the proposed changes. I can now confirm we achieved a slightly better result than expected. Congratulations to all those involved in this significant project.

In summary, the final membership numbers in our major playing categories are:

Full 306 (up from 210)

Lifestyle 158

Junior 82

Weekday 59

Young Adult 37

We have 866 members across all membership categories (both playing and non-playing)

As of this year, all members that have attained 50 years (and more) of membership have received 25% subscription credit and are exempted from paying members credit. We congratulate the following members for their years of membership service achievement: -

  • Dot Moore (61 years)
  • Ross Edmunds (58 years)
  • Noel Daniels (55 years)
  • John Howard (55 years)
  • Brian Vale (56 years)
  • Lloyd Davies (52 years)
  • Tom Arlidge (50 years)

Men's Pennant Div 2 Finals Results

It was tales of not to be for our men's Div 2, narrowly piped at the finish line in the pennant finals, held last Sunday, 30 July. Good wins from Andrew Woods (5&3) and Cian McGarvey (4&3) are to be commended; as they say, they will always be next year for the team. We walk away, proud and we thank all members, caddies and supporters of the team.

Our men's pennant teams finished in the following positions:

Men's Div 4: 8th place

Men's Div 5: 2nd place

Men's Div 6: 5th place

Senior Women Pennant - Heading into finals

Monday 31 July 2023

Wow! Have we ever been lucky with the weather for our pennant season thus far. After a miserable weekend, today blossomed into a perfect day for golf.

Today we played Nedlands at Nedlands, ably supported by Deb Callcott and Fay Truscott who encouraged us along the way! Thanks ladies for coming to join us in our latest quest.

We were warmly welcomed and well-catered for by the Nedlands ladies, including our former Club member Maureen McPhee.

It turned out to be a very successful day all round for us Gozzy Girls with a 2.5 to 1.5 win over Nedlands.

Andy Riggir and Bev Thompson lost 6/5, so were in early to partake of the lovely afternoon tea.

Lyn Johnston and Lynne Smith had a nice 4/3 win and soon joined them!
Sandy Alexander and Colleen Harvey decided to play/endure the whole difficult 18 holes to finish square as the shadows were lengthening.

Sue Symes and Chris Rowden had a comfortable 5/3 win.

The good news is that we are on the top of the leaderboard in the Central Black Division with 7 points, leading by 2 over both Cottesloe and Mosman Park, on 5 points.

Do we dare to dream with our last round next Monday (7 August) at Royal Fremantle against Cottesloe? Fingers crossed and more good team golf! There is no I in the team! However, we are fortunate to have great leadership in our Captain, Bev Thompson.

10th tee

10th tee - caution when teeing off

In the previous newsletter dated 18 July, we reiterated to members the importance of being mindful of errant golf balls from the 10th tee (either your first or second shot) towards our neighbour's houses.

We would like to kindly remind members again of this important message. If you do end up hitting an errant golf ball into our neighbour's property, please report it to the pro shop/office and it is also a courtesy to apologise to our neighbours if you see them.

On the same matter, all off-boundary shots must be reported to the pro shop/office. This will assist us in any follow-up matters.

Roy Wingrove

Roy shot a score that is better than his age

There were talks in the week on whether we ever had a member shoot a score better than their age....well, we didn't have to wait for long!

Roy Wingrove shot 80 (gross) in today's comp (Sat 5 Aug) and he is a young 83 years of age.

Congrats and well done Roy!

What a great achievement and worthy of a high mention.

Quick Reminders - Golf and Course

No carts or buggies are to always cross the blue lines on the course. The blue lines are not just for motorised carts, it applies to all forms of carts and buggies.

Members with their own carts - this is a final warning and reminder that your cart must be at least 5 metres away from the green or behind the blue lines. If you are found to be parking your cart too close to the green, you will receive a written warning.

The pace of play. A good pace of play is about keeping up with the group in front of you.

Members are only allowed to practice playing on the course with a maximum of TWO golf balls. Please refrain from hitting more than 2 during your practice/casual play on the course.

If you are practising your chips/pitches on our chipping green, it is a maximum of FOUR golf balls when there are other members around on the chipping green.
