President Update

Club BBQ for use by Members

Late last year a communication was published to members inviting the use of the club's BBQ. Since this time, the board of management have reviewed all aspects of the BBQ, the policy for use and various other litigious aspects. Whilst on the surface a BBQ in the grass alfresco area for member use seems a simple notion, it comes with layers and layers of complexity.

At last month's board meeting (January), the board of management undertook a complete and thorough review. Our objective was to provide passage for members to enjoy the amenity of the BBQ whilst being mindful of the club's integrity of full-service hospitality, together with risk management and statutory obligations.

By way of background:

At the 2021 AGM, a member's special resolution was passed. The final resolution that was passed, taken from the minutes reads as follows:

"That GGC members, who have been suitably trained to kitchen standards, given unrestricted access to use the BBQ facilities providing that approval is given by the GGC General Manager and that they be afforded the opportunity to purchase their own food should they wish to do so".

Prior to 2022, the BBQ was connected through a gas line that was deemed unsafe and has since been decommissioned. Following the decommissioning of the gas line, a new portable BBQ with a gas bottle was received as a donation from a Club Member.

The Review

  1. The board are satisfied that the above special motion stands.
  2. The board are satisfied that all insurable outcomes for damage, injury and illness are in place. Strict adherence to maintenance and keeping the BBQ clean is part of the booking conditions.
  3. The board are mindful that statutory risk is uninsurable. An appropriate policy for the use of the BBQ will be our only defence should an unfortunate event occur. This is no different to other activities in and around our club premises.
  4. A more practical policy was adopted which preserves the integrity of the club's hospitality offering. It also complements our Bar opening hours at times when the commercial Kitchen is not in use. For example, it would be unlikely the BBQ would be approved for use when the kitchen is open with full staff, IE a Thursday, or Friday night.

In Summary

The portable BBQ is for use by members only.

The conditions of use are:

  1. Members must book, with a minimum of two days' notice directly with office administration. The email address is reception@gosnellsgc.com.au. The member booking will be responsible for the operation of the BBQ and the overall booking.
  2. Members are allowed to bring their own food and must use their own cooking utensils.
  3. BYO alcohol is strictly prohibited - no change to existing club policy.
  4. Members are to pay a fee of $5 per person to cover maintenance and cleaning of the BBQ itself and the BBQ facilities. For example, if the BBQ was booked for 5 people, the cost would be $5pp x 5 = $25.
  5. Members must ensure that the facility is left tidy and clean after use (failure to leave the BBQ area clean & tidy will not be tolerated as we have specific insurance risks with this component).

I would like to acknowledge the collaborative approach in the review by all board members. I believe this outcome is fair, it is well considered, and it provides members with certainty.

I will also take this opportunity to thank our members for supporting the club with our ever-improving hospitality offering. With thanks to the leadership of Carlee, and her friendly and capable team, we can look forward to great events and fun times ahead for members and guests.

Please Enjoy!
