Upcoming Events
As noted in my last update, we are now entering a very busy time in terms of major events in the next month or so. Events such as the G & L Millett Trophy may take a little extra effort to arrange a partner, but we ask for your support of events such as these so that they can continue. If you need help arranging a partner, please let the Pro Shop staff know.
Opening Day - Saturday 24 February
G & L Millett Trophy - Sunday 25 February (Mixed Canadian Foursomes).
Eric Ellar Memorial - Saturday AM 9 March.
TA Parker Memorial - Saturday PM 9 March
Please note that as an Honour Board event, there will be a presentation for the Eric Ellar Memorial on Saturday 9 March following the completion of the AM field.
Our Club Foursomes Championships will be held on Sunday 24 March. To reinforce the importance of this event as a club championship event, it will be held on Sunday morning at 8.15am. I ask members to support this event and start arranging your partner now. The timesheet will open 2 weeks prior on Saturday 9 March to all member categories. Fees payable are the same for all eligible membership categories.
Entries will open by the end of the month for our Gosnells Junior Open (Friday 5 April), Gosnells Senior Open (Friday 19 April) and the Gosnells Open (20-21 April).
Pennants
This season we will have over 100 members representing our club in the various pennant seasons, with the junior pennant season now 3 weeks into a 5 week season. Every golf club will experience some disruption to their regular fixtures whilst the various pennant seasons are being played. At Gosnells, the amended fixtures to accommodate pennants will have a level of impact on every category of membership, so I ask members for understanding on this matter.
As many would know, the Most Valuable Player Medal in the top men's division is named the Merv Blee Medal. With the introduction of a Women's Division 1 Pennant Team last year, we considered it appropriate to also have Most Valuable Player Medal for the women's top team named after a prominent member. I am pleased to announce that going forward the Women's Division 1 Most Valuable Player will be known as the Ros McIver Medal.
Ros has made a significant contribution to the club over a long period of time and was acknowledged as a Hall of Fame inductee at the 2023 Gala Evening.
Congratulations Ros.
Saturday Order of Merit
I am once again pleased to report that Greg Dudley has agreed to sponsor the Saturday Order of Merit through his business RSM Australia.
The Order of Merit season will run from Opening Day to Closing Day. There will be a limited number of events that do not accrue Order of Merit Points and these are:
- Gosnells Open
- Club Championships
- Closing Day
Subject to daily sponsorships, it is possible that there are a very limited number of team based events that do not accrue order of merit points, but these will be limited to no more than three events during the season.
Rules
Recently one of our long-term members had parked his golf cart behind him and off to his right. Unfortunately for our member, he didn't make clean contact with the ball, hitting the tree in front of him with the ball deflecting backwards and hitting his cart.
So the question is, what is the ruling where the ball accidentally hits a person or their equipment.
Rule 11.1a No Penalty to Any Player
If a player's ball in motion accidentally hits any person (including the player) or outside influence:
- There is no penalty to any player
- This is true even if the ball hits the player, the opponent or any other player or any of their caddies or equipment.
Please be mindful though, if a player's ball in motion hits another ball at rest on the putting green and both balls were on the putting green before the stroke, the player gets the general penalty - two strokes.
So the answer - no penalty!
15th Hole Lake remains a compulsory drop due to safety concerns. It is not safe for golfers to retrieve and play their ball from inside the hazard marked lake area.
