The 2025 Senior Men’s Pennants regular season came to a close on Monday with one of our teams advancing into a pennant final. Robbie Pearce’s side has finished atop of the South Black Division and have qualified into next week’s final against Mosman Park at Wanneroo Golf Club.
The Red and Green 4BBB teams came up just short in making finals, but both had very strong seasons. Playing off the stick, our Individual Division 2 team came up against some fierce competition throughout the season, securing 1 win and a halved match across their 5 matches.
4BBB Black Division Results: 4 Wins / 2 Losses / Final Ladder Position = 1st
SQUAD: Robbie Pearce (Captain), Ken Ferris, Bob Cush, Manfred Supper, Don Ong, Guna Nadason, George Christie, Rod Stevens, Andrew Di Carlo, Eddie Purrington, Michael Smart & Wayne Marrell
A great season for Robbie Pearce’s Black Division side saw them secure their finals berth with a week remaining in the season with a strong 3.5-1.5 win over Kwinana at home.
The Black division started their season very strong with 3 consecutive early wins giving them a great ladder position heading into the back end of the year. Having qualified, the team will now face Mosman Park next Monday in the Black Division Pennant final. Best of luck team!
4BBB Red Division Results: 4 Wins / 1 Half / 1 Loss / Final Ladder Position = 2nd
SQUAD: Terry Gale (Captain), David Stephenson, Roy Wingrove, Terry Smith, Graeme Bell, Ken Howe, David Voysey, Chris Hofman, Mick Reilly, Steve Heathcote, Rod Chapman & Mark Chamberlain
Captained by Terry Gale, the Red Division 4BBB team had the most successful season of all teams, winning 4 out of 6 games. The only two blemishes on the team’s season was a 4-1 loss to Royal Fremantle in the opening round and a 2.5-2.5 halved match, also against Royal Fremantle in Round 2.
A great 3.5-1.5 win against Mandurah in the second last game (scroll to see match report written by Terry Gale), and a 5-0 win in the final round against Kennedy Bay gave Red Division a chance to make the final, but Royal Fremantle proved too strong and have advanced, with Gosnells finishing in a very close second. Well done on a great season.
4BBB Green Division Results: 3 Wins / 3 Losses / Final Ladder Position =3rd
SQUAD: John Cameron (Captain), Trevor Jonas, Lou Lombardi, Walter Panichi, Norm Christie, Stuart Allen, John O’Connor, Tony Pieroni, Tony Pragnell, Tim Trafford, Gary Mcknoe, Banjo Patterson & Roy Jones
Our third 4BBB Senior Men’s side was the Green Division team, captained by John Cameron. In one of the tightest divisions in the competition, barely anything has split Melville Glades, Royal Perth and our Gosnells side. 3 good wins in the first five rounds saw Green Division on top of the ladder by 1 point as they headed into the final round of the season, needing a win to advance to the final. Unfortunately, they went down 4.5-0.5 to Royal Perth, ultimately finishing the season in a close third position. A very competitive effort from the team all season, well done to all involved.
Individual Division 2: 1 Win / 1 Half / 3 Losses / Final Ladder Position = 5th
SQUAD: Don Mclean (captain), Russell Goldsworthy, Alan Anderson, Richard O’Hara, Mat Schmelzkoph, Rob Dalrymple, Corin Moore, Mark Halliday, Rob Olde, Greg Dudley & Lino Scartozzi
Playing off the stick, our Individual Division 2 team came up against some fierce competition throughout the season. Often undermanned, Don Mclean’s team were very competitive all season, often playing against players with lower handicaps.
The side finished in 5th overall with 1 win, 1 halved match and 3 losses for the season. In Round 2, they secured a tough point with a halved 2.5-2.5 match against Lake Karrinyup, and in Round 4 the team got their well deserved victory with a 3-2 win over WAGC. Well done to all members who were involved in our Individual Division 2 team this year.
Match Report – Red Division Round 5 vs Mandurah written by Terry Gale
Gosnells Red hosted Mandurah on a beautiful Monday knowing full well that a big win was imperative if we were to have any chance of finishing top of the ladder. The game was delayed slightly as Mandurah were of the opinion that the game was to commence at 12.30pm not midday as was recorded in the fixtures with details as follows:
Game 1 – Hofman & Reilly
Mick and Chris were first out against Phil and Mike in a rematch after our away win at Mandurah and our match began with some controversy when Mike did not arrive on the tee on time after Mandurah failed to check the amended fixture that was updated on Golf WA and highlighted in yellow some 5 weeks ago!!
After some rules checking Mike finally turned up 10 minutes late and we were awarded the first hole. He did par the next with a shot and when Chris narrowly missed a makable birdie putt we were back to square again. The first 9 was a bit of an arm wrestle but with Mick again playing solid golf we managed to turn 1 up. From there we never relinquished the lead at any stage and eventually put the opponents away when Mick made a nice par on the 17th for us to give us a comfortable 3 & 2 win with Mike still whinging about not being told the correct tee time!
Game 2 – How & Voysey
How and Voysey were second off and were looking odds on to walk away with a win when they were 2 up with 2 holes to play. The opposition never gave up and won the last 2 holes to finish all square.
Game 3 – Heathcote & Bell
Belly was solid for the lion’s share of the contest. I was a fair bit below my best. Even so, we gave ourselves plenty of chances, without cashing-in on any of them. Generally, we putted poorly. The absence of speed on the greens took some adjusting. Even on the last hole we could have saved the game. I didn’t follow Belly’s instructions and went pin-hunting when the middle of the green would have been OK. I missed the green and put the ball in an impossible spot. We lost the game because I couldn’t hit it onto a big green from 89 metres. On Monday, I was the weakest link.
Game 4 Gale & Wingrove
We were after revenge after being beaten the week before by the same group. We jumped out to an early 2 up lead but then relinquished it just as quickly as they sank two long putts. Gale birdie 9 to enable us to turn 1 up. Mandurah won the 10th then Gale and Wingrove started to turn the screws by winning 11, 13 & 14 to jump to 3 up. We halved 15 & 16 to win 3 and 2.
Game 5 – Smith & Chapman
Rod and Terry Yinged and Yanged beautifully on the front nine to turn a solid 3 up. An up and down par on 11 by Terry was enough to win the hole and go 4 up. A couple of halves and the axe was looming over the opposition. 14 was closed out by a great downhill putt for par (even though he was told to lag it next to the hole) by Rod. A solid 5 and 4 win, well played
It was a solid 3 & ½ to 1 & ½ win to Gosnells which kept our slender hopes alive. Our last game was against Kennedy Bay at Kennedy Bay. We needed either Kennedy Bay or Mandurah to win at their home course against Royal Fremantle to gives us a chance to make the final.
