Women’s Golf Engagement Statement 2022

Endorsed by Board on Tuesday, 29 November 2022

Golf Australia’s Women and Girls’ Engagement Plan: The Future of Women & Girls in Golf aims to ensure that golf is a sport where women and girls are inspired to participate, feel welcomed and nurtured throughout, and empowered to achieve their goals.

The Women and Girls’ Engagement Plan is playing a critical role in increasing leadership & participation in golf in Australia through five key areas of the game, that align to Australian Golf’s National Strategy:

  1. Telling our story better
  2. Attracting new Golfers
  3. Increasing our Core
  4. Attracting New Fans and Growing Revenue
  5. Working together

The Gosnells Golf Club acknowledges the important role community golf clubs will play in transforming our sport into one that is highly engaging, accessible, and fully inclusive for women and girls.

Gosnells Golf Club officially supports Golf Australia’s Women and Girl’s Engagement Plan and commits to participating in national initiatives designed to increase the engagement of women and girls in golf.

Gosnells Golf Club is the first Club in WA to sign R&A women in golf charter (article external link)

Women’s Garden (near the 9th tee)

The Women’s Garden stands as a symbol of celebration, honouring the remarkable journey of women at our Club from its early years to the present day.

This garden will serve as a permanent reminder of the strength and courage of women and their commitment to our golf club, and we hope it will inspire future generations of women to strive for excellence and contribute to the continued success of our Club.

The Journey of Women’s Golf at GGC (stepping stones in the garden):

  • Foundation Members 1945 (Dreams do come true).
  • Life Members (Outstanding, loyal and beneficial service):

Our first women life member was honoured in 1972 – Amy Harris.

  • Associates (Multitasking ladies to equality as members):

Since the inception of the term ‘Associates’ within the Gosnells Golf Club, the lady members fulfilled roles such as caterers, fundraisers, and entertainers, for major events, in particular, during the early years of the Club’s development.

The Associates attained formal recognition, and eventual voting rights as members of the Club as their numbers grew rapidly.

Over recent years, mirroring modern life, the numbers have declined and the future is now, no more ‘Associates’ but the evolution into Members of the Gosnells Golf Club.

  • Business Associates (Working women play on Saturdays):

The Gosnells Business Associates commenced in 1965 with four ladies and was initiated by Betty Connell.

Casual arrangements were made as they did not see a true future in this aspect of the Club, however the Gosnells Business Associates continued to grow in numbers.

The ladies were successful both at State and Interstate level as players or administrators of this group of working lady golfers, who, by definition, were unable to play in a mid-week competition.

  • Women in Golf Charter 2023 (and so the journey continues):

‘The future of Women and Girls in golf aims to ensure that golf is a sport where women and girls are inspired to participate, feel welcomed and nurtured throughout, and empowered to rich their goals….

….The Gosnells Golf Club acknowledges the important role community golf clubs will play in transforming our sport into one that is highly engaging, accessible, and fully inclusive for women and girls.’
